1966
Jefferson Airplane
Left to Right: Paul Kantner, Skip Spence, Marty Balin, Signe Anderson, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady.
The original Airplane included Signe Anderson, female vocalist, and Skip Spence on drums. He was kicked out of the band shortly after their first recording, after taking an unannounced vacation to Mexico. (Spence helped form the band Moby Grape in September ‘66.) Spencer Dryden became the new drummer. Anderson left the band in October ‘66 and was replaced by Grace Slick.
Guitar Showcase
Bud Eastman started Guitar Showcase in 1965.,
(I took lessons there from ‘65 to ’66.)
In 1967, Eastman started Guitar Player magazine.
The Soundbreaker Song List

- For Your Love (Yardbirds)
- You Really Got Me (Kinks)
- I’m Henry the VII, I Am (Herman’s Hermits)
- Evening on the Beach (Randy Hill instrumental original)
- Moon Dawg (Beach Boys)
- Man From Uncle Theme (Soundbreakers original arrangement)
- The Witch (Sonics)
The Madras
I remember seeing the Madras perform on a flatbed trailer in the parking lot of Music Village on Union Ave. The song I’ll always remember was “Still In Love With You, Baby,” though at the time I didn’t know the title. It was years later that I learned that the song was the ‘B’ side of the Beau Brummels hit “Laugh, Laugh.”
